Cancellation of the 2020 European Transplant & Dialysis Sports Championships
After discussions between the Local Organising Committee in Ireland and the Presidential Committee of the European Transplant & Dialysis Sports Federation it has been agreed that the 2020 European Transplant & Dialysis Sports Championships are cancelled.
This decision has been driven by health and safety concerns related to the Coronavirus Covid-19. These concerns are for the participants, supporters, volunteers, officials and the organisers. There is an expectation that hospital services in Ireland, and across Europe, will be overwhelmed by the virus. Already we are seeing national health services restricting people on haemodialysis to their own Centres and not permitting holiday dialysis domestically or internationally.
Transplant recipients and people on dialysis are in the ‘at risk’ category for the virus. When asked about the Championships, medical opinion has been unanimous – cancellation is in the best interests of the health of all involved.
All registrations submitted to date will be cancelled and there will be no cost involved for the individuals concerned. The rate of registrations slowed dramatically in the last three weeks – evidence that many potential participants realised that there was a strong possibility that the event would be cancelled.
The Federation would like to acknowledge the commitment of the Local Organising Committee in all their work to date. They had put in an enormous amount of work and were committed to delivering a quality event. Happily, the Irish kidney Association has not been deterred and is intending to submit a bid to host the 2024 Championships.
Please share this with your members and we wish good health to all as the world tackles this pandemic.
